Level 4 Diploma in Education Studies

A 120-credit Level 4 qualification equivalent to the first year of a UK honours degree. Explores education theory, inclusion, safeguarding, equality and contemporary practice. Fully online, no exams. First step in BLC's education degree pathway.

Course Overview

The Level 4 Diploma in Education Studies is a 120-credit Ofqual-regulated qualification equivalent to the first year of a UK honours degree. It provides a strong academic foundation in education theory, policy and practice — building the skills in critical writing, research and analysis needed for higher-level study.

The programme explores key theories, policies and debates in education with a focus on learning and development, inclusion, safeguarding, equality and contemporary educational practice. It is designed for anyone aspiring to work in education, returning to study, or looking to progress to a degree pathway without taking the traditional university route.

Completing this diploma provides direct entry to the Level 5 Diploma in Education Studies or Level 5 Diploma in Teaching. Together they reach 240 credits, giving access to the final year of a BA (Hons) in Childhood and Education Studies, Early Years, or related Education degrees at partner universities.

All units are assessed by written assignment with no exams. Awarded by TQUK, an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation. Delivered online by BLC (UKPRN: 10058020).

Frequently Asked Questions

What degree can I progress to after completing Level 4 and Level 5?
After completing both Level 4 and Level 5 (240 credits total) you can progress to the final year of a BA (Hons) in Childhood and Education Studies, Early Childhood Studies, Early Years, Education, or BA (Hons) Primary Tuition with QTS at partner universities.
What is the difference between Level 4 Education Studies and Level 5 Education Studies?
Level 4 builds your academic foundation — education theory, research skills, inclusion and safeguarding. Level 5 deepens your understanding with advanced educational theory, global policy, research methodologies and critical analysis. Together they are equivalent to the first two years of a degree.
Can I progress to the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching instead of Level 5 Education Studies?
Yes. After completing Level 4 you can choose either the Level 5 Diploma in Education Studies (academic pathway, no teaching practice) or the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (practical pathway, includes teaching practice and route to QTLS). Both lead to the same degree progression opportunities.
Are there exams?
No. All units are assessed by written assignment submitted online. No timed exams.
Is this available to international learners?
Yes. Delivery is entirely online and available to UK and international learners. If English is not your first language, IELTS 6.0 or equivalent is required.
